News And Notes Of Novato

By Betty Machado

Hello, Dear Hearts

Partridge Knolls is back in the news

Where is the report from the mediator, John Griffith? This situation has been going on since 1997. Familiar names appeared on the last buckling of sidewalks just on June 16. Ralph Hints, a Cobblestone resident states: "It's another example that the hillside is continuing to move." However, Bob Fink states the same sidewalk has been repaired several times already since the slide in February, 1997. He says, "It's been repaved three times. That's where the action is, at the bottom of the slide. After the last time it was repaved, it kept pushing and pushing, and it opened up." John Griffiths called a meeting on Monday, June 22, but only representatives from the City of Novato, the developer (Westworth Development) and the Buck Center were invited, no homeowners were present. The agenda for the meeting was a report by geotechnical experts covering the cause of the landslide and different ways to control it. Maggie Christie of Nunes Drive says, "Cracks are now apparent in more driveways along neighborhood roads." Cracks in front of her home stretch across the street. I have had a TV program on this issue; maybe it's time to invite John Griffith back.

Did you know?

Damon Erik Pedersen was the grandson of Ralph "Swede" Pedersen of the Sausalito Fire Department and Pat Pedersen of Santa Rosa. He was killed in a tragic car accident on May 17, north of Novato. Only 19, a resident of Novato, he was the son of Kenneth of Petaluma and Sue Haluska of Novato. Mary Connell of the Novato Advance did a wonderful obituary on Damon. Our sympathy to the families Damon was a member of, now missed.

California veterans license plates

Are you aware you can purchase for $30 a Vets plate for your car? All proceeds from the sale are used to expand veterans services throughout the state. Mort Tallen, of the Marin County Service Office, has the applications in his office on North San Pedro Road. Or you can call 1-800-952-5626.

Novato has a Teen Center this summer at Hamilton

The Novato Parks and Recreation on June 17 started a teen center for 11-18 years old in the Hamilton Pool Cabana (Officers' Club). It will be open on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings from 7-10 p.m. except on Friday until 11 p.m. The program has a variety of activities: swimming, sports and game tournaments, boxing, art projects and movie nights. There will be special events like, dances, outings and barbecues. All programs will be supervised by the Novato Parks and Recreation personnel. The swimming pool will be available free on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 7-9 p.m. We have come a long way in Novato with our Parks and Recreation programs. I just hope I don't hear anyone say there is nothing for teenagers in Novato!

Received in my mail

Popular Novato orthodontist Garry Gast and his wife Lori got more than they expected when they purchased their new car from Novato Ford. While the duo waited for their paperwork to clear, they filled the time by entering a contest to win a new color TV. The duo was presented a brand new 32-inch Q uasar set on Friday, June 12, by Ali Omoomy, general sales manager for the dealership. The win was about due. The last time Lori Gast won anything was in elementary school when she received a jump rope for the best Halloween costume! Congratulations, you two!

Fourth of July parade

Do come and see the wonderful parade we will have on Grant Avenue. A lot of work has gone into this event and we know it will be a success as always.

Jan Ta School of Dance present "Three"

This was a wonderful event I attended in the Dixie School. There are three acts, three teachers and three styles. Janet Wise, the late Ena Wise's and Dan Wise's daughter-in-law has a very successful dance studio here in Novato on First Street. This review is at the start of summer with the close of the schools. The students work very hard to put on this event. A friend invited me to watch her granddaughters, one being Kayla George. Kayla did a beautiful job. It is such a joy to watch our young people devote such time and energy in their activities to perform for us. Large crowd, and all from Novato!

Remember Jim White of Novato Office Supplies?

He sent me a wonderful letter telling me about his new enterprise after spending 31 years operating the Novato Office Supply. He has a new career with Warehouse Direct dealership. His goal is to provide hometown service at a coast-to-coast price. Call him at 898-3926. He will be glad to hear from you. Remember he was the outstanding Businessman of the Year before he closed his Grant Avenue store.

Downtown Specific Plan

The Planning Commission did not support this plan when it came before them in May. So one would assume it died for a lack of vote of confidence. No way. Ned Lagin, Chair of the Planning Commission plus Chair of the Downtown Specific Plan plus a member of the Economic Development Commission working out the economics of the Downtown Plan, has it back before the Planning Commission. I am sure he will try to change the commissioners' minds.

Have a great Fourth of July.
