Better than $4,000 has come from readers since late last year when the Coastal Post encouraged readers to give a buck to the newspaper if they liked a story or just wanted to help the free publication with costs. "It has really helped the newspaper stay fairly current with its expenses," says editor-publisher Don Deane. "It is great to have the reader support. It really does make a difference." More subscriptions have also resulted from the "give a buck" campaign.
It costs about $30,000 a year to publish monthly. The help from readers amounts to 13 percent. The newspaper has always been on the short side with advertising and as it is free at newsstands, revenue comes from subscriptions, some advertising, contributions and volunteer efforts.
"So here we go again," says Deane. "If you like the paper and support its independence, send a buck to keep it on trucking in Marin."
Bucks or checks can be sent to P.O. Box 31, Bolinas, CA 94924.
