'Tis The Season For Cycling' - All Road Users Need To Be Share-aware

During Bike to Work Day in May, Marin saw a 38% increase in bicycle commuters which shall surely continue with rising gas prices. The Marin County Bicycle Coalition (MCBC), and Marin County Law Enforcement are hosting Share the Road Checkpoints in June and July in an effort to continue educating all road users about their shared rights and responsibilities.
In 2007, approximately 1900 motorists and 600 cyclists were provided with Share the Road materials at four on-road Checkpoints. Educational literature is provided in a friendly manner about the ways everyone can safely and conscientiously share the roads. Uniformed officers and MCBC volunteers will provide Share the Road flyers to motorists and cyclists that pass through each Checkpoint. The flyers contain California Vehicle Code information, Codes of Conduct for bicyclists and motorists to foster respect for each other, plus safety and courtesy tips.

Checkpoints will be conducted at the following locations:

Saturday, June 28 - Fairfax, 8:30 - 10:30 AM, Broadway and Bolinas;

Saturday, July 12 - Novato, 8:30 - 10:30 AM, Novato Blvd. at San Marin Blvd.:

Saturday, July 19 - West Marin, 8:00 - 11:00 AM, Location to be determined;

Saturday, July 19 - Ross, 8:00 - 11:00 AM, Downtown Ross;

Saturday, July 26 - San Rafael, 8:30 - 10:30 AM, Pt. San Pedro Rd.;

Sunday, July 27 - Sausalito, 8:30 - 10:30 AM, 1000 block of Bridgeway;

MCBC Executive Director Kim Baenisch says, "With rising gas prices and concerns about traffic congestion and global warming, we are seeing a definite increase in the number of cyclists on the roads. All road users need to be aware of each other's presence. The Marin County Bicycle Coalition provides the Checkpoints - one of three main components of our ongoing Share the Road program - as a friendly means to communicate life-saving safety information."

The Marin County Bicycle Coalition is a nonprofit membership-based organization whose mission is to promote safe bicycling for everyday transportation and recreation. For more information about the MCBC, visit www.marinbike.org
