To Speaker Pelosi: So?
By Antonio R. Serna
When asked recently by reporters what Vice President Dick Cheney had to say about the very low performance rating of the Bush administration as a result of the Iraq war and its effect on the country's economy, the cocky V.P. used a single word to express his thoughts on the matter: "So?" The Vice President has always proven to be a man of few words and his one word reply dramatically illustrates his disdain and contempt for the American people. In a way it is the kind of answer that we deserve having proven how timorous we are to let our leadership behave this way for the past seven years.
There are more questions that should be asked of Mr. Cheney and most probably he will have the same answer:
How do you feel serving two terms as Vice President by virtue of two allegedly rigged elections? Answer: "So?"
You are identified as the chief architect of the Iraq war, which came to fruition on the strength of deceit and lies. Are you not ashamed to have committed such a criminal offense? Answer: "So?"
You and the president have acceded to be subjected by the 9/11 Commissions to interrogations only if you do it together and not conducted under oath. Why are you behaving this way? What secrets are you hiding from the American people? Answer: "So?"
Large corporations, enjoying close connections with you, have been awarded juicy contracts in Iraq without the benefit of public bidding. As a consequence your buddies are raking in extravagant profits at the expense of thousands who are losing their lives in this illegitimate war. Is this fair?
It is very obvious that it was you and not the President who was directing the conduct of our government's reaction during the 9/11 attack. You were in a secret bunker while the president was reading nursery books in a grade school classroom while the American people were being subjected to the most horrible attack to our homeland by terrorists who have earlier told the world about it. Do you have any sensible explanation to this curious and suspicious scenario? Answer: "So?"
"Hey, what are all these questions for? If I have done anything wrong, why am I still holding this office? If President Clinton can be impeached by the American people on some absurd grounds related to his personal sex life, why don't the American people impeach me if I have indeed committed the numerous impeachable offenses attributed to me? Look, you guys either put up or shut up. O.K.?"
Vice President Cheney is right. Let us put it on to Speaker Pelosi who is currently cooling her heels on the impeachment articles already submitted for discussion in congress by Congressman Waxman and Congressman Kuchinich. How about it Speaker Pelosi? As the Vice President puts it: "So?"
