We Are Publishing!
By Don Deane

I sit here at my desk with the December edition of the paper nearly complete and find that neither of the printers will do its job of creating the publication. This has to do with old programs, new systems and tired computers, well, one tired computer. The other one is still lively. It is also about not having quite enough geek in me to overcome whatever the specific glitch might be. If you are reading this missive, the problem got solved.
Rumors were rampant in the month of November that the Coastal Post was done. To be honest, it was being considered for suspension, an interruption in its regular publication for a short time.

Deciding to do that-suspending the publication-was impossible for me to do. It has been publishing for 32 years. That's a long time doing something to just up and stop.

The Coastal Post was transformed into a thing of beauty over the last year-attractive as the paper has ever been. The greatly enhanced graphics, color, and the increased local content and commentary were all due to the thanks of Jeanette Pontacq, our editor until this month. Differences between she and I could not be resolved, just as the full appreciation for her contribution and work cannot be fully expressed.

So if we can get this little publication up and running this month, what is it to be? What is it to become? Where is the value of it?

Publishing stories and covering issues which are excluded or ignored by mainstream media is important to me. Seeing multiple news sources covering the same issues with the same slant or angle when so many vital issues never see the light of day is a waste of time and resources. There will be more of this kind of coverage in the coming year.

Continuing to be a news and commentary outlet for contributors and columnists will be accelerated.

Publishing more letters will also be a priority.

Ceasing to publish at a loss is a must. Our red ink over the last twelve months will come to over $14,000. We can nearly reduce the negative altogether by reducing the number of papers by 25 percent and cutting our mailing costs to post office boxes. Residents in Stinson, Bolinas and Pt. Reyes won't see the paper each month in the mail, at least for the time being.

And if we can convince 50 or so people with businesses and services to place a business card ad in the paper at $50 a month, we'll be in the black, almost overnight. That would be very positive.

I do recognize my own limitations in the arena of advertising revenue. We've had a few great ad reps, but not so many. So, think about it. Your business card has got to cover what you offer. Give yourself and your business a boost. Sending in the car and printing it could be a snap.

Your continuing support as readers and advertisers is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
