EDITORIAL
BY DON DEANE, EDITOR, COASTAL POST

The West Marin Medical Center in Point Reyes Station is one of the things that makes present West Marin what it is for the rest of us. Dr. Molly Bourne has been one of the best things around West Marin. Not just because she is a really nice lady, but because she embodies what is good and true here in West Marin. She IS what medicine SHOULD be all about. She was always open to new ideas and added her creativeness to our need for health care. She cares and takes more than the proscribed 10 minutes allowed by Managed Care, per patient. She seemed to actually know each of us as a human being. She is/was a gift to West Marin. One we are losing.
Molly Bourne got broad-sided by Managed Care and the crazy reality of our nation's for-big-profit-to-stockholders health system. An excellent and caring physician is leaving us because the overall system of health care in this county is a travesty of unfairness to doctor and patient alike.

It is unlikely that our national priorities and financial system will change quick enough to keep Molly Bourne among us. The departure of Molly Bourne is a sign that we all need to realize how broken our health care system really is, even in this 'last best place.' Yes, many of us can go over the hill and squeeze ourselves into the Managed Care system, but we pretty much have to leave our souls behind. We will be 'managed' from then on. Our lives will be held in the balance.

The present system needs to change. Period. Which means that each of us needs to become an activist for change in the health system in this country. Now. Right now. What steps are YOU taking? I suggest each of us SPEAK UP AND ACT OUT. Silence equates to acceptence.

In my opinion, the only thing that makes sense for the future is universal care. That means an overall health system that is open to all residents of this country, without charges, supported by taxes. Like in Europe and Canada, (i.e. the civilized world.) Anything that keeps the insurance companies in control of our lives and health (for profit) is not good enough. Health care should not be held hostage to profit for the insurance companies and their stockholders.

From this moment on, the Coastal Post will become an actor in the fight for universal health care for us all. Losing Molly Bourne is a sign that we all need to act up, act out and demand better. Without the voices of people demanding their right to decent medical care unfettered by for-profit demands, we will never come out of the hole dug for medical care in this country. Are you with us?
