Worse Than Watergate
By Antonio R. Serna

The American people have spoken. Control of the Legislative Branch of our government is finally in the hands of those who truly represent the sentiments and values of our people. With the two Houses of Congress currently under the control of Democrats, we can now expect our law makers to start pursuing the American people's agenda rather than that of special vested interests.
The first thing we should do is to correct the mistake of having sent our loved ones to Iraq. We have to get to the bottom of the lies and deceit resorted to by the Bush administration in suckering us into supporting its war mongering efforts. We should give the 9/11 tragedy investigation another shot considering that the two commissions that conducted their respective inquiries both fell flat on their faces. If they could not even get President Bush and his Vice President Cheney, to testify under oath and interrogated separately, how can we give credence to their findings? These gentlemen are the main suspects in the numerous conspiracy theories floating around and until they can publicly clear themselves of suspicion, the 9/11 mystery will always remain a mystery.

We cannot revamp our government unless we start from the top. Otherwise all our efforts will be an exercise in futility. The president has his veto powers which he will use to the fullest. He will elevate critical legal cases to the US Supreme Court which is waiting and ready to come to his rescue. We need to rectify the anomaly committed by the US Supreme during the 2000 presidential election. Suffering from the result of that aberration for the past five years is too long to endure.

As Atty. John W. Dean, the former counsel to President Richard Nixon, said about the two men in the White House in his book titled WORSE THAN WATERGATE: "George W. Bush and Richard Cheney have created the most secretive presidency of my lifetime. Their secrecy is extreme - not merely unjustified and excessive but obsessive. It has created a White House that hides its president's weaknesses as well as the Vice President's strengths. It has given us a presidency that operates on hidden agendas. To protect their secrets, Bush and Cheney dissemble as a matter of policy. Dick Cheney who runs his own secret governmental operations, openly declares the he wants to turn the clock back to the pre-Watergate years - a time of an unaccountable and imperial presidency. To say that their secret presidency is undemocratic is an understatement."

President Nixon fell from the weight of the Watergate scandal. Bush and Cheney's misadventures make Nixon look like an altar boy in comparison. All we need to do is put their feet to the fire as we did with Nixon. Let us prove to the world that we are a country of laws - not of men.
