Eatn' Out Restaurant Review
Two Bird Cafe in the San Geronimo Valley
By Jeanette Pontacq

The Two Bird Cafˇ in the San Geronimo Valley is a find. The first time I went there was as a guest of a Lagunitas local, who raved about it. I was sure he must be overstating the fine points of the restaurant, but I was wrong. I have now been back at least 30 times, and it seems to get better each visit.
The Two Bird is one of those places where you immediately feel at home, where they know your name. The ambiance is definitely "San Geronimo Valley Classic." The walls of the restaurant often host the work of local artists, some of whom you may find sitting at a table near you. It has a small outside seating area, in the shade of large native trees and the main rooms are of old wood, with a fireplace in the main area. The ghost of San Geronimo Past seems to be happily ensconced near the fire on winter evenings.

The service is excellent, with a friendly, local staff. I always feel welcome and "at home" in this restaurant. Tony Miceli, the owner, is a charmer as well as a consistently good chef. He is also quite involved in the local community, often coming out of the kitchen to chat and schmoose with other locals.

It's the food that impresses at the Two Bird. The menu changes daily, via specials posted on easy-to-read chalk boards. Lunch recently offered Baked Fresh Salmon with mango, fresh ginger, capers and chardonnay; Petrale Sole Milanese; BBQ oysters and BBQ Pork Spare Ribs as a combo; a Lost Coast Sandwich of smoked salmon, bacon, sliced crisp apple and red onion on wheat toast; broiled Ahi tuna with teriyaki sauce, and baked, fresh Cannelloni. Collective vote by my group of tasters was that the menu was creative, the food high- quality and tasty, and the price more than reasonable! In my experience, it is unusual to find such creative and good food at such low lunch prices.

Dinner menus as well change daily in order to offer repeat customers a movable feast. Last time our group was there, dinner specials offered Baked salmon with macadamia nut crust and balsamic reduction; Pan-seared fresh large scallops with chipotle cream; Steak au poivre (pepper steak); Chicken breast sautˇ with peaches and brandy cream; and Roast leg of lamb. I personally have had the scallops and would go back in a flash for more! They were tender and delicious in that chipotle cream! Yummy.

Desserts are homemade, again changing daily. Last time I was there, the offerings were Tiramisu, Strawberry shortcake, Peach pie and Chocolate cream pie. I can tell you that the Strawberry shortcake is super and worth the calories!

In all categories, price, cuisine and service, the Two Bird is a winner. I highly recommend the restaurant and the staff. Thanks, Tony!
