Challenging the Neo-Liberal Model of Globalization

Concerned by more than 74,000 protests in China last year due to massive urban job losses from privatization and land grabs fueled by foreign investors and urban expansion, the Chinese government is responding with new programs to address the impacts of globalization.
Across the Pacific, rising resistance in Latin America has resulted in newly elected governments led by labor and indigenous movements that have rejected the "Washington Consensus" of free trade and privatization and are exploring new options for international economic relations.

Victor Menotti and Dale Wen, co-authors of recent reports by the International Forum of Globalization (IFG), including "China Copes with Globalization: A Mixed Review," and "Paradigm Wars: Indigenous Peoples' Resistance to Economic Globalization," will explain how the backlash to global free trade is evolving into sophisticated political movements and what useful lessons they contain for taking back our own democracies and economies here at home.

This event will be held at College of Marin's Olney Hall, College Avenue, Kentfield, on Friday, May 12, at 7:00 PM. Sponsors are the West Marin Alliance, Marin Interfaith Task Force on the Americas, Marin Peace and Justice Coalition, and COM Students for Social Responsibility. A $5-10 donation is requested. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. STUDENTS FREE. Wheelchair accessible. For more information call 415/924-3227, email [email protected], or go to www.mitfamericas.org.
