Oracle Independent Study-Why Does This School Work For Many Students?
By Cede Ramjerdi

Oracle is the school that I am currently attending. This is the only program that I have been successful in. There are many students who have found this true too.
This school is a type of home schooling. Students are allowed to choose their school books with help from teachers. This is a way for students to decide what they have an interest in. They will work in these books for a few semesters. Students are given the attention they need. Tutoring is available as is supervised work at school in addition to weekly appointments. Oracle makes sure that students are successfully learning what they need to know. Teacher and students have a relationship because there is, only one student and one teacher. The teacher is able to teach their students more than in a typical class room. Teachers care that their students get a tremendous amount of education and guidance for their short four years of high school. Students can move at their own pace, by this I mean that teachers will start teaching their students from where they left off. Students can learn their own level of facts.

If students need help in a specific subject they will get a tutor to help them master the skills. Teachers at Oracle are dedicated to helping their students prepare for life. Students do the work involved in high school and do not waste all of their time in unrealistic situations.

Oracle works, because students can come in once a week to receive their assignment. The next week students give their teacher their work to grade. Oracle enables students to get a job, and learn skills that everyone needs for their future. To encourage students to work, students are given one high school credit for every 18 hours that they work. In regular high schools like Tam High School, students do not have time to work.

Tamalpais High School and Oracle Independent Study take complete opposite approaches in teaching students. Oracle is a great alternative to Tam. Schools like Tamalpais High School, students must show up, complete all of their work, and spend every night and weekend doing homework. I previously attended Tamalpais High. I felt as though I had joined the military; the linear ways of teaching did not help me learn.

This school, Tamalpais High, can and has worked for many students. To succeed at Tam High School you must be prepared to spend at least five hours a night studying. If a student fails to do this huge amount of work they will fall behind and not be able to learn from Tam.

Lynn Bagley a student at Tam and resident of Bolinas said," Tam high loads me up with so much work, that I cannot express myself. I am very overwhelmed, and do not have time to think about anything but school." This is a big problem, high school is supposed to guide you to find a career, yet Lynn cannot focus on anything besides meeting Tam requirements.

Oracle is a great alternative for students who can't succeed attending many high schools. It has great teachers and staff. The school would not be around without the Rosalie Laird the school principal, and the Marin County Office of Education. This program might even be great for you! To contact Oracle for enrollment information, please call (415) 491-0792 and ask for Rosalie Laird.
