Bolinas World Craft Faire
By Flower Sierra
Fifteen years ago, a Craft Faire featuring folk art from distant lands, premiered at the Bolinas Community Center. Christened the Bolinas World Craft Faire, it provided a venue to showcase exotic treasures created world-wide and locally.
A festive bazaar atmosphere, world music and ethnic cuisine became the background for these annual celebrations. This unique event was almost lost forever, when the promoters retired last year. But at the last minute, I volunteered to run the faire and it promises to be a fun weekend with new energy joining the long-time participants.
Featured will be paintings, cards, and music CD's, by local artists, along with hand-crocheted hats, a wide variety of fabric art, beaded jewelry and candles. World travelers will offer Huichol Spiritual Art, South African beadwork, jewelry from Thailand, Nepal & Tibet, clothing from India and Thailand, masks from Sri Lanka, Indonesian arts and crafts, Baltic amber, and a wide variety of ethnic treasures and folk art.
Bring an appetite because we are excited to offer Creole cuisine, both days of the Faire. The menu features red beans and rice, fried chicken, Cajun catfish, greens, seafood gumbo, and Creole shrimp soup. Spin the "Wheel of Fortune" and relax in our cozy cafe, while enjoying the friendly ambiance of the Community Center filled with positive vibrations and art from EVERYWHERE.
Please, join us, December 17 & 18, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The World Cafe will be open later Saturday, for dining and take-out. Input is welcomed to help make this a harmonious and fun community experience.
