Barbara Deane, a 44 year resident of Marin County, died in San Rafael on August 9 at the age of 85. She was born on January 4, 1915 in Boston, Massachusetts and spent the first twelve years of her life in Mexico where her father was a mining executive. She attended Lincoln Prep School in Providence, RI, and Katherine Gibbs in Boston.

Mrs. Deane had lived at Smith Ranch in San Rafael since 1991. She was previously a long-time resident in Greenbrae with her husband Col. Don L. Deane, who died in 1998.

The Deanes retired to Marin County in 1957 after Col. Deane's military career with the US Army Veterinary Corps.

Mrs. Deane was actively involved with the Marin Foundation and the Marin Art and Garden Center, serving terms as president of both organizations. She was instrumental in establishing group homes for troubled teenagers in the sixties and seventies. She was an avid bridge player.

Barbara Deane is survived by her sister, Phyllis B. Bradley, and two sons, Anthony L. Deane and Don R. Deane.

A memorial service will be held at the Church of The Nativity, 333 Ellen Drive in Lucas Valley on Friday, September 1 at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Marin and Guide Dogs For The Blind in San Rafael.
