Inverness Garden Club Awards Scholarships
Thanks to the generosity of the community and members of the Inverness Garden Club, the Inverness Garden Club Scholarship Fund Committee (IGCSF) is pleased to announce that the Committee has awarded $83,500 in college scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year to 27 students from coastal West Marin. These students represent 6 high schools and 7 coastal West Marin communities. Twenty-three students will receive college scholarships; 4 other students were granted merit awards. Twelve of the awards will be given to new students, most of whom are about to become freshman in their college of choice, and fifteen will be awarded to continuing students or students whom we have funded in a past year. Two outstanding scholars will receive the IGCSF's most prestigious award, the Horticultural Award, which was initiated in 2008 and is given to a junior or senior whose major is in horticulture or a related field.
The first scholar to receive the IGCSF's Horticultural Scholarship, Rio Patton of Bolinas, will be receiving this award for the second year in a row. Rio, who will be a senior at Humboldt State University this year, has ably co-managed the Arcata Educational Farm at Humboldt State University and concomitantly conducted research in wildland soil science. The other recipient of the Horticultural Scholarship is Alessa Lopez of Pt Reyes, a junior at Evergreen State, who, through a position with AmeriCorps propagated plants for a Nature Conservancy garden and conducted applied research on the stinging nettle plant. She is recognized by the faculty for her skills in botanical drawing.
The new students who will receive IGCSF scholarship awards this year are: Davis Allen, Ashley Bagley, Brittany Furlong, Brenda Gomez, Charlotte Kostelic, Rocio Rodriguez, Araceli Sanchez, Yesenia Teodoro, Elizabeth Vega and Oliver Whitcroft. The continuing students who will receive awards are: Ariana Aparicio, Sierra Dierks, Casper Gorner, Lucas Guilkey, Brian Hollern, Nora Livingston, Beatriz Martinez, Jody Mazzucchi, Isabella Oppen, Theana Pouteau, and Elena Corea-Sanchez. The following four students will receive Merit Awards: Daniel Boyes, Catherine Janes, Lillian Platis, and Liza Sternik.
If you are interested in supporting the Inverness Garden Club Scholarship Fund Committee in its mission to provide assistance to deserving coastal West Marin students, please send a contribution to the IGC Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 724, Inverness, CA 94937. With the downturn in the economy, many families are struggling. The opportunity to have a college education could lift the life and the chances of success for a deserving but financially encumbered coastal West Marin student. Again, the IGCSF Committee gratefully acknowledges the support which we have received in this financially difficult year from both the community at large and IGC members.
