An Apology From The Publisher

I would like to apologize to our readers who were offended by the article submitted by Israel Shamir and published in the May 2008 edition of the Coastal Post.
It is rare that the paper intentionally publishes an article or opinion piece to offend any segment of the readership, although free press publications that offend no one probably aren't picking the right stories to publish.
I saw the primary thrust of Mr. Shamir's article a defense of President Jimmy Carter who had returned from a personal peace mission to the Middle East. He received an onslaught of criticism for his efforts and rage from those who disagree with his political point of view. The Bush Administration and Israeli Government have often taken the position that the best kind of diplomacy is one of shunning those with whom there is serious disagreement or opposition.
The article did not distinguish between Zionists and Jews, or between progressive American Jews and conservative Orthodox Jews, the Jewish Lobby and AIPAC.
The politics and his terminology were muddled, confusing and at times, offending to readers. Those folks did not see a defense of Carter-like him or not-they became angry by the overtones which they considered prejudiced and ill considered. For this I sincerely apologize.

Troubling Times For Palestine And Progressive Jews
Blame for the horrific death and destruction in Gaza over the last 30 days belongs to Israel and the conservatives who wield power in that Middle Eastern country. Hundreds of children have been slaughtered. More hundreds of civilians have been killed. Children and adults who were devastatingly maimed are in the thousands.
There is no satisfactory explanation, excuse or justification.
The United States is not without blame. Last month majorities of both the House and Senate voted to support and endorse this genocidal aggression by the Israeli military against a civilian population. This is after eight years of unwavering support for Israel's brutal policies by the man that was President of the United States for the last eight years-George W. Bush
Most of the civilized world, including progressive Jews in America and Israel, are aghast and disbelieving these barbaric actions could occur in the 21st Century. F-16 warplanes, battle tanks and battle groups attacked a captive civilian population of 1.5 million human beings who had been starved of food, fuel and medical supplies for months because of closed borders, sealed by the Israelis.
Our government continues to provide billions of dollars in aide to Israel each and every year. The weapons used by the Israeli military are for the most part American made, provided by the American Government.
The grief and angst of progressive Jews everywhere is overwhelming. They cannot accept or support the policies of Zionists and the Israeli Government that has led to this massacre.
