Woolsey-Generations Will Bear Iraq War's Financial Cost
-As Americans file their taxes, cost of occupation continues to climb-

Washington, DC - As millions of Americans rush to finish their taxes today, Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), the Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, joined several of her House colleagues in highlighting the crippling financial burden of the President's continued occupation of Iraq. Woolsey made her remarks at a press conference this morning organized by Reps. Jane Shakowski (D-IL), Jim McGovern (D-MA), and Peter Welch (D-VT).
"Last month the Progressive Caucus put forth an alternative budget, one that demonstrated what can be achieved when we stop fueling unnecessary military programs, end the occupation of Iraq, and reorder our spending priorities to ensure the basic needs of all Americans.

"The results were remarkable.
"We were able to fully fund the education system that our children deserve, and that our nation will depend on to remain competitive in a global economy in the years to come.

"We were able to invest in green jobs, which not only help put millions of Americans back to work, but ensure that our nation is on the path to energy independence.

"And we were able to bring health care coverage to every American who lacked it, not only fulfilling our promise to care for each other, but making our country stronger and more competitive in the process.

"I site these examples because a budget is a reflection of our priorities as a nation. And there couldn't be a better time to talk about spending priorities than tax day - when millions of Americans scramble to dig through shoeboxes full of receipts, count their deductions, and try to figure out why line 43 just doesn't seem to add up.

"But what really doesn't add up is the crippling financial burden that President Bush and his Republican allies are imposing not only on all of us taxpayers, but on future taxpayers. While he is paying for the occupation of Iraq with half a trillion dollars - and counting - in borrowed money, it will be our children and our grandchildren who will be forced to pick up the tab - imagine their tax burden!"
