Women & Girls Town Hall Meeting A Success
By Kate Kain
Marin Women's Commission
The first West Marin Women & Girls Town Hall Meeting, held in January, was a great success, with over 60 participants providing thoughtful input to the Marin Women's Commission. The information gathered will be part of a countywide needs assessment being conducted by the Marin Women's Commission, with town hall meetings being held in southern, central and northern Marin as well. By established authority, the Women's Commission makes recommendations to county officials on the needs of women and girls.
The West Marin community was invited to present issues of concern about the well being of women and girls growing up and growing old in West Marin. Challenges such as lack of childcare, health care for teens, senior care, domestic violence and environmental issues were addressed as well as ideas for local action and solutions.
Input was also gathered from high school students, which covered challenges they face as a result of sexism, racism and isolation.
A special art exhibit was brought to the Town Hall Meeting by Tomales High Art instructor Rachel Somerville, consisting of pertinent sculpture and drawings by female art students at the high school.
Many were moved by the depth of concern and the range of ideas expressed and want to begin moving forward now. Therefore the Marin Women's Commission invites the community to attend the upcoming West Marin Women & Girls Moving Forward Now Town Hall Meeting, which will be a follow-up to the first meeting, on March 6th, 7 - 9 pm at the Dance Palace Church Space in downtown Point Reyes Station.
We recognize the readiness and resourcefulness of the participants, and urge those who can, to join us once again. If you are ready to move forward now on improving the lives of women and girls in West Marin, join us for a working town hall meeting to determine the next steps that can be taken locally, and to identify those that require county support. The meeting will be conducted in English and Spanish, and we'll be joined again by Harmony for singing! For further information contact Kate Kain, at kathleenk@horizoncable.com.
