Marin Poet Laureate Program Announced

The Marin Arts Council, in partnership with the Marin Poetry Center and Marin Cultural Services Commission announces the creation of the position of Marin Poet Laureate. Nominations for the position are due by February 1, 2008. Application materials are available at www.marinarts.org. The first Marin Poet Laureate will be announced in April.
As an ambassador for poetry, the Laureate is expected to promote citizens' awareness of poetry as well as heighten their appreciation of the art form. The Laureate will strive to forge a meaningful connection between poetry and the populace, undertaking projects that make poetry more available and more accessible to people in their everyday lives.

"Marin County is home to an extraordinary number of nationally recognized, award-winning poets", stated Arts Council Director, Jeanne Bogardus. "Having a county Poet Laureate is a natural reflection of the wealth of talent that lives here. With the Marin Poetry Center and the County Cultural Services Commission, we have been able to finally establish this tradition, and we look forward to a long line of Marin County Poet Laureates."

During the Poet Laureate's two-year appointment, he or she will be expected to officiate at selected public gatherings, initiate a dialogue between poets and the community, inspire others in their writing and personal expression and bring recognition to the history and tradition of poetry in Marin County. Those interested in nominating a Marin poet, downloading an application or reading more about the process may go to www.marinarts.org.
