Migden Announces Legislation Requiring Oil Spill Response Within 2 Hours
SACRAMENTO-State Senator Carole Migden (D-San Francisco/North Bay) has proposed legislation in response to last month's Cosco Busan oil spill in the San Francisco Bay which would change the allowable response time for future San Francisco Bay oil spills from six to two hours. Migden said the change is essential to combat the natural tidal action in the bay that quickly spreads oil spills.
"This is a great first step in successfully responding to future oil spills," said Gordon Bennett, executive committee member of the Sierra Club's San Francisco Bay chapter.
The bill is just the first in a package that will be introduced in January by Migden, Senators Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), Chair of the Senate Natural Resources Committee; Dean Florez (D-Shafter), Chair of the Senate Governmental Organization Committee; and Sen. Joe Simitian, Chair of the Senate's Environmental Quality Committee.
