Bolinas Water Crisis Update
By Don Deane
Bolinas Community Utility District Manager Jennifer Blackman says the Bolinas water crisis is diminishing. Aging water filters scheduled for replacement have reduced the volume of treated water for the district promising the likelihood of water shortage were there heavy use or a fire.
"Things are getting much better," Blackman said. There has been a very positive response from the community. The storage tanks were nearly full last week but a leak in the water main on Marin Way put us behind again."
A Marin Way resident reported the leak after the 4.0+ earthquake on Friday, July 20. "There had been a small leak in the pipe which became a very large leak after the earthquake," Blackman said.
The district is still hoping to do the filter system upgrade in August, according to the manager. "But we will have to make an on the spot decision when we're ready to make the change. We have to take half the water treatment off line for a week," she explained. "There will have to be an assessment of what we have in storage and how consumption is going before we decide to go ahead," Blackman concluded.
