West Marin Community in Action:
KWMR Open Mic & Cafe Fundraiser Jan. 27

The idea of a commons as part of sustaining a community has been written about elsewhere (see guest editorial, page 2) in this edition of the Coastal Post, so it seems fitting to also be able to present news of a fun community event to bring us all together in January: the 4th annual Community Cafˇ & Open Mike event, to be held this year in Bolinas at the Community Center, 5-9 p.m. Since the event is sponsored by KWMR radio (90.5 Point Reyes/89.3 Bolinas), as a fundraiser, we went to the source to interview the event coordinators, Vicki Leeds of Point Reyes Station and Peter Asmus of Bolinas.
"It would be hard to outdo last year's huge success," said Vicki, but our goal is to add even more diversity of talent and fun things to do, eat and drink." Last year the offerings included everything from a teenage belly dancer to a ventriloquist to Lyons Filmer in a BumbleBee outfit, reading a poem. Not to mention the myriad musicians, singers and dancers. Last year, the event ended with singer Maria Muldaur walking off down the street in Bolinas leading participants in a spiritual sing-a-long as she went! That's a hard act to follow, but Vicki, Peter and the whole KWMR crew of volunteers thinks they can do it.

So if YOU think you have a talent with which you would like to entertain and amaze the sure-to-be eclectic audience on January 27 (Saturday), call KWMR at 415 663 8068/#3. All ages are welcome, as are our friends from outside West Marin. The admission is low, only $5. Food is being prepared by volunteers under the direction of chef/event planner Catherine Broomhead of Stinson Beach. Foodies will be happy with organic shepherd pie, natural soups, super pizzas, apple crisp and more. Donations have come from Star Route Farm, Mark Pasternak of Nicasio and the Rouge et Noir cheese factory, among many. There will be children's plates, and $5 plates for adults. Since West Marin is part of the Foodie Empire, $10 will get you a super meal if you so choose!! All monies go to KWMR to keep it going!

A Silent Auction is planned, so if you have something you would like to offer, again contact KWMR at 415 663 8068/#3. What else? Well, the Bolinas Community Center has a fireplace for you to keep toasty warm these cold nights; food comes on real dishes, not paper or plastic; there will be great music, great acts and great fun. Be there or be square.
