OUR "FORTUNATE PRESIDENT"
BY ANTONIO R. SERNA

It is encouraging to know that there is indeed a security network in place to protect our key establishments in Washington D.C from terrorist attacks and that it actually works. The 1,000 pound piper cub that stumbled into the no fly zone triggered an alarm that caused the evacuation of a reported 35,000 people. This however, is not sufficient cause for celebration. It hardly reassures us that our security apparatus there is always working. It does not tell us if the kind of alarm raised yesterday is to be expected should the errant plane be another commercial jet loaded with explosives and controlled by suicidal terrorists, rather than a harmless, old, decrepit mini-piper cub.
It is obvious that what was in place yesterday is exactly the same system existing on September 11, 2001 and yet the Pentagon was hit then without a peep from it. What is the difference between then and now? The question in the public mind is: if the whole security system can be switched on and off by orders from some top authority. If this is so, why was it on yesterday and off on 9//11/01? And why do the security breaches happen when the president is not there? Is he ever there? Vice President Cheny was there on both occasions. It appears like the Washington establishment is so used to be operating without George W. Bush that they even forgot to inform him of the security breach that occurred yesterday in the capitol area. Thirty five thousand people were evacuated and the president didnŐt know about it.
Hey guys -- the president is back from Russia or didnŐt you know? He is the commander-in-chief, you know. He is the only guy in this country who may launch a nuclear war that can obliterate mankind. True that it may not be his own decision. But it has to be his presidential finger that does the pushing of that fateful button. That is what being an elected president is all about.
Who, really is running this government? On 9/11/01, the president was in a grade school classroom, reading a nursery book. Yesterday he was in Maryland riding a bike. It was not clear whether the bike had three wheels. What was the president doing in Maryland playing with a bike when he is supposed to be in the Oval Office clearing his desk of important business that piled up during his week of absence? Or does Cheney now always take care of that too?
During the 2000 presidential election, a book titled "FORTUNATE SON" appeared in the book stands. It was a totally complete biography of George W. Bush with information compiled from numerous sources that the book listed in its thirty pages of references. The information was so candid that it was ordered recalled by the Bushes. The book for instance prefaced its content after an observation gleaned from the famous quotation of Charles Caleb Colton, Lacon, 1825: "It is easier to pretend to be what you are not than to hide what you really are; but he who can accomplish both has little to learn in hypocrisy." Is his fame of being a "FORTUNATE SON" now transcending into his being a twice elected "FORTUNATE PRESIDENT"? If that security breach that caused the evacuation of 35,000 people in Washington D.C. has done any good at all - it is to open our eyes to the fact that we indeed have a "FORTUNATE PRESIDENT".
