Marin Leadership Awards Made In December
During November
2004, Marin community members were invited to nominate individuals whose
leadership has made a significant impact in the Canal and/or Marin City communities in the areas of Health & Environment to
receive the Building Healthy Communities Leadership Awards!
The nominees below were chosen to be awarded based on their grassroots
approach to the healthy development of communities they are part of. They were
honored at the Building Healthy Communities Celebration, which took place at
the Marin City Senior Center, on Thursday,
December 9th, 2004, at
6:30 p.m. Thanks to all of them for their
example of leadership!
CANAL NEIGHBORHOOD
Mrs. Claudia Asprer
Claudia is the ultimate community leader. She is comfortable working with
all families, but has made the most impact working with the Latino families of
Marin. As a foster mother of over 20 children in 6 years, she values the
importance of utilizing children's strengths to help them be successful members
of our community.
She is the coordinator of the Baby Think It Over program, which is a teen
pregnancy prevention program designed to have a hands on way of approaching
parenthood and pregnancy. The program is very successful due to her passion
and dedication to the adolescents of Marin. (Mrs. Cio Hernandez, Nominator)
Ms. Du Van Pham
Ms. Pham began her work as a Community Health Educator for the South East Asia since 1992. She had conducted a
multiple year public health campaign that raised the level of awareness about
Health damage from tobacco use. Ms. Pham also included AIDS education, cancer
prevention, and other health issues in her daily work.
Ms. Pham took her health education into English as Second Language classes,
into the private homes, into auto mechanic shops, and other workplaces on
Saturdays, and to every community festival. Ms Pham greater impact was in
helping refugees learn how to function in the American system. She has gained
the trust of her community by being an effective advocate for their health,
their children, and their rights. ( Mr. Vinh Luu, Nominator)
MARIN CITY NEIGHBORHOOD
Mrs. CD Lee Townsel
Mrs. Townsel is the bomb! She is a founding member of the Marin City
Community Development Corporation and has been participating in several
community building activities as a member of the Marin City Resident Management
Corporation.
Mrs. Townsel is a survivor of breast cancer for more than 30 years. She
attributes this to watching what she eats and staying active. She keeps up with
the time and is willing to accept the new Hip-Hop culture! (Ms. Juanita

Ms. Jean Williams
Ms. Jean Williams is getting ready to retire in January 2005. Over the
years, she has provided great leadership for the Ineice Bailey Toddler Center, which has thrived under her
leadership. The Center has been an invaluable resource to Marin City community and its families. (Ms. Sharon Turner, Nominator)
